Animal Farm: A Political Allegory
A Summary
The Setting
Animal Farm, originally known as Manor Farm, is a microcosm of the Soviet Union under the rule of Joseph Stalin. The animals, dissatisfied with their living conditions under their human farmer, Mr. Jones, decide to revolt. They succeed in overthrowing Mr. Jones and establishing a utopian society based on equality and freedom.
The Pigs' Betrayal
However, the pigs, led by the cunning and ambitious Napoleon and Squealer, gradually consolidate their power. They manipulate the other animals, rewrite history, and create a class system that perpetuates their dominance. The farm's ideals of equality and freedom are slowly eroded as the pigs become increasingly totalitarian.
The Consequences of Tyranny
The animals eventually realize the true nature of the pigs' rule. They attempt a rebellion, but are quickly defeated. Animal Farm becomes a replica of Manor Farm, with the animals living in even worse conditions than before. The allegory serves as a warning about the dangers of tyranny and the importance of resisting oppression.
